Season 13 Top Chefcontestant, Kwame Onwuachi’s 2019 memoir ‘Notes From a Young Black Chef’ will be adapted as a movie featuring Lakeith Stanfield, of Atlanta and Sorry to Bother YouFame.
The James Beard Award Winning chef’s adaptation, written with journalist Joshua David Stein, will follow Onwuachi’s journey exploring the entirety of his life working his way through the white, elitist world of fine-dining. The movie will recount Onwuachi’s life in the Bronx, living in Nigeria with his grandfather, his experience on Season 13 of Top Chef and his restaurant experiences like the opening and closing of his first restaurant, Shaw Bijou in D.C., after two-and-a-half months.
Onwuachi, in an interview with the Washington Post said that he is not familiar with the film world, but added “Obviously, I’m with A24, so it would be cool if Barry Jenkins was able to do it.”
Currently, Stanfield is the only cast member announced for the movie so far, per Eater. Viewers can see Stanfield in Netflix’s Someone Great and is slated to star in the murder mystery, Knives Out, directed by Rian Johnson, Uncut Gems from A24 starring Adam Sandler and in the movie Jesus Is My Homeboy with Daniel Kaluuya chronicling the life of infamous Black Panther member Fred Hampton.
The film adaptation will be executive produced by Onwuachi and Stanfield and financed by A24, the production/distribution company that brought Moonlight, The Farewelland Midsommarto theaters.
